Manifesto 2000 Public Awareness To promote the International Year of the Culture of Peace and the Manifesto 2000, UNA-Canada in conjunction with the Canadian Commission for UNESCO hostrf a pair of public-awareness booths at this years Canadian Tulip Festival in Ottawa. The festival which lasted from May 12 to 22, was held in two locations; Commissioners Park near Dows Lake Pavilion and Majors Hill Park just west of the Parliament Buildings. The booths at both locations had information on the International Year of the Culture of Peace and encouraged people to sign Manifesto 2000 (over 3000 signed!). Manifesto 2000 is a document drafted by a group of Nobel Peace Prize Laureates on the occasion of the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The Manifesto promotes an environment of non-violence by way of its six tenets; Respect all life; Reject violence; Share with others; Listen to understand; Preserve the planet and Rediscover solidarity. In addition, the Majors Hill Park display showed videos and have an in-depth display about the Manifesto. We were really excited about working at the Tulip Festival, says Genevieve Talbot, Peace and Security Officer at UNA-Canada. It was a great opportunity to promote IYCP and Manifesto 2000. We were able to collect thousands of signatures for this important document. To help raise funds for UNA-Canada, the Majors Hill Park kiosk sold Tulip bulbs. |
