Annual Meeting 2000

The first UNA-Canada National Annual Meeting of the new century was held in Ottawa from June 8 to 11. We were pleased to have at least one representative from every Branch at some or all of the sessions. Most of the meetings were at the University of Ottawa, but everyone had an opportunity to visit the national office space as well – and most of the office staff attended and participated in some of the sessions.

It is always useful when you can put a face to the names of the key activists and develop a sense of personal relationships as we work together to enhance the understanding of and support for the UN in communities right across the country. In addition to the more formal business aspects of the AGM there were also opportunities to explore ideas for new programme initiatives and the development of evolving organizational structures within the Association. We were also able to arrange for some very interesting briefings/addresses during the weekend.

  • After a tour of the Lester B. Pearson Building we had a most informative briefing covering the current state of a variety of issues on the UN agenda by Patricia Lortie, Director General of the International Organizations Bureau. She was joined by Patrick Wittman from the UN Security Council Affairs section and Kerry Buck from the Human Rights, Humanitarian Affairs and International Women’s Equality Division.
  • We were fortunate to be able to join the Canadian Institute for International Affairs for dinner and an address on United Nations Peacekeeping – a changing landscape by Louise Fréchette, Deputy Secretary-General of the UN.
  • The new representative of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees in Canada, Judith Kumin, shared a succinct and moving picture of the challenges facing UNHCR as it approaches its 50th anniversary later this year.
