Youth International Internship Programme 1998
by Charissa McIntosh

UNA-Canada’s Youth International Internship Programme for 1998-1999 is in full swing. As of April 30, 1998, UNAC had received over 600 applications to the programme for the 20 internships funded by the Department of Foreign Affairs. Almost half of the positions have now been filled. We expect the selection process to last throughout the summer.

As part of the internship programme this year, we have added an exciting new partnership between the UN Development Programme and the Canadian International Development Agency. As a result, seven interns will be placed with UNDP offices—five in the field and two at the Headquarters in New York. The selection and placement process for these positions has only just begun, and we anticipate having all seven interns "in the field" by September.

On May 14-15, an orientation session was held for the first set of interns preparing to leave for internships abroad. These individuals will be working with the UN High Commissioner for Refugees in New Delhi, the UN Institute for Training and Research in Geneva, the UN Secretariat and UN Youth Unit in New York, the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia in The Hague and with the Food and Agriculture Organization in Rome.

Our next session promises to send interns off to work with UNA-UK in London, the UN Commission on Trade and Development and the International Trade Centre in Geneva, the International Labour Organization’s Staff College in Turin, UN Volunteers in New York, and the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean in Washington.

Earlier in May, our first debriefing session was held for 14 returning interns from the 1997-1998 programme. After more than a day of reflecting and sharing their experiences at home and abroad, the interns attended a career orientation workshop held at UNA-Canada’s offices in Ottawa. They studied the job market, set objectives and consulted with an expert. All left with high hopes and expectations. Subsequently, many have found challenging new jobs!

One of the ways that UNA-Canada is helping these interns to reintegrate into the Canadian job market is by sending them current job postings on a weekly basis. We have also created a listserv for the interns to use as a tool for communication and networking.

Renewal of the internship programme for 1999-2000 is currently under review. Make sure to keep an eye on our internship page for updated information.
