UNA-Canada Selected to Coordinate Youth Internship Programme In an exciting development that will involve more young people in the work of the organization, UNA-Canada was chosen by the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade (DFAIT) to coordinate a youth internship programme for twenty promising young Canadians that will provide work experience in UN and UN-related agencies. DFAIT is funding the project through their Youth International Internship Programme. To be eligible for the programme, candidates must be Canadian University graduates who are currently unemployed or underemployed, and aged 21 to 30. UNA-Canada is also gearing the programme towards graduates in political science, international relations, sociology, business, communications/journalism and other related fields of study, who maintain an active interest in international affairs and UN-related issues. Approximately half of the internships will take place entirely abroad, promising not only stronger links for the organization with many of the UNs Agencies and our NGO partners around the world, but also ensuring a rich and rewarding work experience for all of those involved. New York, Washington and Geneva, along with other locations around Europe, are favoured as the host-cities for UNA-Canadas fresh young employees. The excitement with which the programme has been received can be registered by the number of calls we have already received regarding the programme. Within hours of putting up a section on our web site about the 6-8 month internship programme, new applicants were sending in their c.v.s and calling Jacinthe Morin, the Programme Manager for the Project. "This programme represents a real opportunity for young Canadians keen on becoming involved in the work of the United Nations and on developing an exciting start to their professional lives." The first group of interns will leave in June, with the second group following in August. Foreign Affairs has already developed a job bank of over 900 interested applicants from which it is expected many of the positions will be filled. Other interested applicants should fax or send their Curriculum Vitae, along with a cover letter expressing their interest in the programme, to Jacinthe Morin, Programme Manager |
