The United Nations Association in Canada is hiring an Officer with proven communications skills to develop and implement communication strategies for new and existing UNA-Canada projects, and to support the implementation of initiatives especially related to Water. Duties:

1. Work closely with Project Officers/Managers to plan, develop, and implement communications strategies for UNA-Canada projects, programming;
2. Engage media (TV, radio, print) in promoting UNA-Canada projects in participating communities;
3. Update and maintain project websites, blogs, and network pages;
4. Coordinate and disseminate research;
5. Event planning and regional visit(s) by project staff;
6. Develop communication resource and support materials as needed for UNA-Canada projects;
7. Develop 'media sensitization kit' to build media participation in water-related issues;
8. Conduct 'engaging the media' workshop to youth audience, to foster proper media outreach of project by youth participants;
9. Develop Q & A's for staff and community branches as needed; prepare briefings for Executive Director and Managers;
10. Proposal writing, fundraising and event planning;
11. Develop and maintain databases related to project contacts for media and outreach;
12. Perform other duties related to project operations and as requested by Project Officers/Managers;
13. Contribute to the growth of UNA-Canada.

Qualifications:

1. 2 + years experience in project implementation and/or communications / PR or Post-Secondary degree with specialization in journalism, communications or related focus;
2. Knowledge of public information principles, practices and techniques;
3. Developed networks with local, regional, and national journalists, news managers, and other news executives;
4. Ability to work both independently and as part of a team that are located in different cities;
5. Experience and demonstrated talent in design, layout and graphic service production;
6. Operating skill in the following programs: web and desktop publishing software, Dreamweaver, Fireworks, Photoshop, PowerPoint and other research-related software including Excel;
7. Strong organizational and time management skills, with ability to pay close attention to detail;
8. Understanding of the Government of Canada and its branches and agencies, and familiarity with the United Nations bodies and values;
9. Demonstrated ability to problem solve, prioritize, multi-task and meet deadlines;
10. Bilingualism an important asset (French/English, Oral/Written);
11. Interest in Water Issues (locally and globally), Human Rights, Youth Programming, Education and Outreach.
12. Commitment to the values and mission of UNA-Canada.

This position is a ten-month Part-time contract, with the possibility of extension, located in Toronto, ON. The application deadline is Monday, May 12, 2008 at 5:00 PM EST.
