What is the International Youth Internship Program (IYIP)?

The IYIP is an employment programme run by the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA). It is part of the Federal Government’s larger Youth Employment Strategy coordinated by Human Resources and Skills Development Canada (HRSDC). The programme provides funding to the United Nations Association in Canada's (UNA-Canada) Junior Professional Consultant Programme. The JPC programme offers Canadian university and college graduates valuable first paid career related work experiences in a United Nations (or UN-related) setting.

There is a stipend allocated per participant to cover PART of the budgetary expenses for round-trip travel costs, medical insurance, training and orientation costs, living allowance, etc.

What are the programme’s goals?

The three key goals this programme seeks to achieve are:

  1. to provide young Canadians with an opportunity to work and interact in an international environment;
  2. to give young Canadians a "hands-on" work experience to enhance their employability;
  3. to offer young Canadians the opportunity to learn about the United Nations and to establish a valuable network of contacts within the United Nations system, as well as UN-related agencies and organizations.

Who is eligible to participate?

Eligible participants must meet ALL of the following requirements. They must be:

  1. A Canadian citizen or a permanent resident of Canada.
  2. A graduate of a post-secondary institution; not enrolled in a full-time educational programme (as of September 1 2007); unemployed or under-employed.
  3. Between ages 19 and 30.

*Please note that some of our placements commence in July 2007. Candidates will not be considered for any placements with start dates earlier than your first available departure date as indicated on your application form.

This programme accepts applicants from many disciplines including: international affairs (relations), peacekeeping and peacebuilding, political science, economics, history, women’s studies, public policy, geography, environmental studies, anthropology, sociology, law, languages, etc. Applicants should demonstrate that they have an active interest in the work of the United Nations and UN-related issues.

PLEASE NOTE - You are not eligible if:

You have already held an internship position or an international work placement under the Career Focus Program of the Youth Employment Strategy (YES).

Can this programme be used as part of my placement requirement for my academic degree?

No, this programme is intended for individuals who have completed their studies. The IYIP Programmes cannot be used for academic credit because it is a paid work placement. Unlike voluntary internships, this programme is sponsored by the federal government's Youth Employment Strategy and is directed to young Canadians who have graduated.

How long are Placements?

The duration of the placement is 6 months. All participants are expected to fully complete their placement period. Please note, the IYIP programme does not offer short summer internships.

What types of placements are being offered through CIDA?

This year there are 7 CIDA-funded internships offered. All postings are designed by the host agencies themselves. Upcoming placements may include:

- United Nations Development Programme (Namibia, Cambodia)

- UNICEF (Namibia)

- World Food Programme (Mali, Laos)

- Office of the Resident Coordinator in Rwanda (Rwanda)

What is UNA-Canada's *NEW* Professional Internship Programme?

Given the high competitiveness of the direct UN internships, and the federal Government's cutting of DFAIT's YPI program, UNA-Canada recognizes the increasingly high demand for youth employment opportunities.

UNA-Canada is launching a pilot self-funded program. With established partnerships with UN agencies around the world, UNA-Canada will administer 20 only self-funded internships.

Services: Through the payment of a $2500* placement service fee to UNA-Canada, you will receive the following services and support which has made UNA-Canada internships the most coveted in Canada and internationally:

  • Match qualified individuals with quality placements.
  • Provide a 6 month international professional work experience at a UN agency
  • Prepare and organize briefing sessions including cross-cultural communication, professional networking, psycho-social transition as well as guidance on travel and insurance arrangements, visa requirements, student loan applications, vaccinations, related health considerations, and accommodations while abroad
  • Establish on-going email and telephone contact communication between participants and UNA-Canada to ensure personal and professional development
  • Provide targeted and consistent job search support
  • Provide a list of resources to explore alternative sources of funding
  • Provide access to "Cost of living forms" by former JPCs in select countries, to determine budgetary costs.

**All costs associated with the internship placement, including: travel, accommodation, flight, visa, etc. are incurred by the intern*

The recruitment, application and selection process is the same as the CIDA sponsored placements.

Please note that we do not post full descriptions of the placements on our website. We do, however, carefully examine each application against the criteria for all positions. On the application form that we provide, we will ask you to indicate your placement preferences. Effort will be made to take your interest into consideration when selection for the participants takes place.

How are the participants selected?

Selection is based upon the Terms of Reference (ToR) that are provided by the Host Organization and depend on the positions available in a given year. UNA-Canada strives to provide the best match to host criteria.

Is it too late to apply?

Yes

What are the timelines for decisions to be made re: CIDA Internships? When will the CIDA placements begin?

Successful short-listed candidates will be notified by early June. NOTE: All programme participants will be required to attend a briefing session in Ottawa at the end of June. Placements will begin as early as July, depending on the needs of the host organization.

Is the JPC programme the same as the JPO programme?

No. UNA-Canada's Junior Professional Consultant (JPC) programme is funded by CIDA's International Youth Internship Programme and is a uniquely Canadian initiative. The Junior Professional Officer (JPO) programme is an initiative of the United Nations. Through CIDA, Canada sponsors a number of JPOs, though separately from the IYIP. UNA-Canada is not in any way involved in the JPO programme.
