Explanation of the Different Gift Designation Options and the Benefits of Being a Donor or Member of UNA-Canada

General Donation

A general donation supports national programmes and will be used wherever the need is greatest. It is not membership. Becoming a donor of UNA-Canada has many benefits, including:

  • Access to our unac-discuss listserv on topical international issues
  • Access to our e-donor updates, sent to interested supporters 4-8 times each year with updates on UNA-Canada activities and how their support is making a difference
  • Opportunity to receive 3-4 mailings a year which focus on a critical global issue or UNA-Canada programme, informing you about the issue and providing simple options for pro-active engagement and action
  • Invitations to nationally-organized events that have a global focus. Typically, invitations are only sent to supporters living in the vicinity of any such event.
  • Pride in knowing that you are part of a committed and energetic citizen's movement in Canada, all sharing in the common quest for peace, disarmament, human rights, equitable and sustainable development and the elimination of poverty. The very same issues and vision which the United Nations strives for, and actively works towards, every day. By uniting our voices, we are building a better UN and a better world. There IS power in numbers.

Membership

Membership in UNA-Canada is both national and local; 25-35% of the total annual membership revenue is given to the Branches. Becoming a member of UNA-Canada comprises many benefits, including:

  • All of the above-mentioned benefits of becoming a donor
  • A membership card
  • Automatic membership in one of our regional Branches (if you live in the vicinity)
  • Invitations to local events and activities, organized by your Branch
  • The opportunity to participate in, and vote at, Branch Annual General Meetings
  • The opportunity to participate in national Annual General Meetings
  • The option to become active as a UNA-Canada volunteer

UNA-Canada has no set annual membership fee because we believe that all Canadians should have the opportunity to become members, regardless of their financial situation.

Donation to a Specific Branch

You may choose to make a donation to support the local volunteer-driven initiatives of a specific Branch. The donation should be made out to UNA-Canada (not the Branch) as all charitable receipting is done at the national office. 100% of your donation will be promptly transferred to the Branch you specify. Please note that this is NOT membership. Membership is run at the national level, and the combined funds of all membership across the country is shared with the Branches.

Reserve Fund

Donations to the Reserve Fund are invested for a minimum of 10 years. The Fund provides stable long-term support for the Association.

Join our world-changing effort. By uniting all our voices we can make a difference.

What is the Difference between Membership and Donations (or Members and Donors)

Please note that there is a difference between "Membership" and "Donation". A donation to UNA-Canada does not automatically make you a member. UNA-Canada is a democratic, self-governing Association, operating under national By-Laws. Members have specific rights (see left), including voting at the Branch level. As such, an individual must legally specify that they want their gift to be a membership gift. There are several ways to do this:

  • respond to any mailing that talks about membership renewal (as opposed to focusing on an issue)
  • handwrite "for membership" on your reply coupon
  • select "membership" on any on-line gift form
  • fill out one of our blue membership brochures, available at Branches and events
  • become a monthly giver

Membership names are shared with local Branches, donors are not. Only members-in-good-standing (those who have made a membership gift in the past 12 months) can vote.

Some people want to be a member, whether or not they choose to become actively involved. They like to belong, they appreciate hearing about activities in their community, and they like knowing that a portion of their membership gift is going to support their local Branch.

Others are not interested in the concept of membership and prefer to make donations only, to focus 100% of their support on national programmes. Such supporters are called donors by UNA-Canada.

On average, the ratio of members to donors is 3:2.

All levels and types of support are equally important to us and are greatly appreciated. How and what you contribute to is simply a matter of individual preference.
